Low Sun is set in our very universe, but with a much darker twist. It is the modern era; anything you can think of that might be at home in the current age is welcome in this setting. History has run its course in much the same fashion. At the heart of this story, however, lies a small – but growing – population of supernatural creatures, ones whom have gone to great lengths to keep their existence hidden from the public eye. Humans tend to distrust and excise that which they do not understand, and with their meager numbers, it has been a long-standing rule amongst the paranormal community to keep your head low. Staying hidden is tantamount to survival.
This is all about to change.
The United States government has grown wise – quietly, secretly – to the existence of supernatural species, and is making a slow and disorganized effort to solidify this knowledge while keeping the public unaware. A special branch of the FBI has been tasked with this responsibility, and their agents tend to operate with a catch, track, or kill methodology; there is little consistency between hunters, which can make them particularly threatening. Werewolves, for their frequent pack structure, larger numbers, and potential danger, have become a prime target, but no population is resting easy.
This crackdown has resulted in a mass migration of paranormal citizens. The cities have been the first to feel the government’s heavy-handed touch, and out of that spark of fear new safe havens have cropped up, looking to avoid the FBI’s detection. A small population of werewolves and other species have moved to the quiet of Blackwater, Arizona, but are quickly discovering they are not the first creatures to call this town home. Blackwater's resident pack of werewolves - run by the deceptively innocuous-looking Billy - is divided on how to deal with the growing number of unwanted outsiders.
In contrast is New York City. Most of the US’ big cities are home to some controlling faction of supernatural creature, and in New York’s case, it is werewolves. Paranoid about discovery in the wake of recent government intervention, the New York pack has cracked down upon its members, as well as members of the paranormal community and other species not under its direct control, and has made a huge effort to track and monitor those individuals within their borders. Drop-ins by pack enforcers are frequent, as are plots to eliminate those residents prone to more threatening and reckless lifestyles. It is a big enough town that there are plenty of folks who don’t realize what’s going on, but for those who do, expect curfews and strictly enforced rules that risk toeing the line of a police state.
None of these potential plots are mandatory, though they should be occurring as a backdrop to plots and threads of your own. If you have no interest in taking part or are not sure how, you are still welcome to roleplay, and include the plot – or not – at your leisure. If you want to play along, feel free to introduce NPCs, side with opposing factions, and advance the storyline at your own pace!
Witches, werewolves, vampires and zombies; the paranormal citizens that lurk just in the dark of Low Sun are myriad and nearly limitless, largely contained only by the scope of your own imagination. You are encouraged to play most any creature you can think of, and help move the site’s plots forward through interaction and invention, but without ever having your character’s integrity jeopardized by mandatory and altering storylines.
